Walser is my hommie

Image
First time I read Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it stroke a chord in me. It was as if the person I wanted to be in secret was out there doing the talking for me. When I first read Kafka, I felt that Kafka was to Garcia Marques, what Garcia Marquez to me. It would be a stretch to take this one step further with Robert Walser and Kafka, but it is no secret that Kafka read out Walser loud and laughed his guts out, and the first few pages of Geschwister Tänner struck a chord in me too. His life story is very interesting and sad at the same time. He spent a great deal of time in Weimarer Berlin, sitting in the Cafés and Bars, meticulously observed and wrote about the "creative" types there, something that I wish I had the time for when I was in Berlin. One time he went to a private school to become a butler. In the end, he was sent to the mental hospital, where he devised his own writing style and wrote what the experts now call his Micrographs, that contain stories fittin...

The Ultimate Disillusionment Song or: Long Live Tenderness!

Image
German Music has a tradition of hitting the perfect balance between disillusionment, cynicism and that weird hope that follows from realizing that it does not matter all that much. Perhaps this goes back to Nietzsche, I am not sure. Jetzt! was a seminal German Indie-Rock band that linked historically the experimental revolution of the Neue Deutsche Welle  and the Hamburger Indie-Rock revival of the 90s. Geographically it linked the jingle-jangle sound of the British music to German Music. The song "Kommst du mit in den Alltag" has recently became my 30-year-old blues anthem. Since I could not find any English translations of the lyrics, I thought I'd better share this German gem with English speakers: once you told me, you'd leave this city, the life in the city, just made you weary, you were never there, where your dreams are, you may not yet know where, but here are they not for sure... Is this all, what life has to offer: Care to join the dullness...

Meine Interesse an Klaus Kinski ...

Erster Schneefall

Rucola - Rucola - Arugula - Rocket - Roka

In the days before  Linnaeus things were easy for herb enthusiasts. If two herbs or spices looked and/or tasted the same, one would just add an adjective in front to make the distinction. It looks like radish, but it taste different? Call it horse radish. It tastes like Marjoram, but grows in the wild? Call it wild marjoram. This naming convention leads to many confusions to the modern food enthusiast, who suddenly, can taste items from across the globe in the convenience of  their supermarket alleys. One of my biggest confusions regards the bitter leaves of what I grew to know as "Roka" in Turkey. I'll try to clean this confusion with the help of Wikipedia and the great Carl Linnaeus. This is what I know as Roka in Turkish. Its species name is Eruca Satvia, and is known as Arugula or Rocket in the English-speaking world. In Italian its called the Rucola comune, i.e. the common rucola. I guess both Germans and Turks have taken the word from Italians. This on...

Bin ich gut Zugedeckt? Bin, Ich, Gut, Zu-Ge-Deckt?

The German efficiency is still working. No matter how strong/weak Australia was, the performance of this young and new team is remarkable, or as the Germans would put it "bemerkenswert". However, I couldn't enjoy the game, rather the post-game as much as I could. In Germany, World Cup is broadcast on two channels alternatively. ZDF and ARD. In ARD, there is the cult football commentary duo Gerhard Delling and Günther Netzer. They are by far the most hilarious thing I watched on German TV. In ZDF, a serious old lady and Oliver Kahn, whose nickname was the Gorilla. No wonder I prefer ARD. Netzter was the first super-star of German football. A Porsche driving, night-club owning player from the small German town Mönchengladbach, lead his team to trophies in Germany and Europe. He was transferred to Real Madrid as the first German player in the Spanish side. He went on to become a media entrepreneur, marketing sports tournaments to media companies. He's a clever guy w...

My first cheese

Image
My first shot at German Harzer Käse. It is a sour milk cheese, which means all you need is Lactobacteria, which are abundant in milk already. One drains low fat, and I mean low fat %1, quark or cottage cheese, mixes with salt and baking soda, and wait 7 days for the bacteria to work their magic. Not bad for a first try. The salt was a little too much, still it was edible with walnuts, and would have made an excellent grating on Pasta alla Norma.

Best Football Song I've Listened

Die Toten Hosen is the best German Punk band without question. They are also hardcore Fortuna Düsseldorf Fans, who at one point financed the transfer a player for the club. They have a great song about the bad guys in German football, F.C. Bayern Munchen. I had the time on my daily subway commute to translate this great song: There are not many things in this world, To hold on to, Some say its love, maybe they've got a point, There is always god, when there's no one else left, Some believe in nothing, life's hardened them up, So many things can happen, So many things, There is only one thing I am sure of, I would never play for Bayern! If I were 20 yeras old, and super talented, And Real Madrid had knocked on my door, Along with Man United, I had already played for Germany, And mentally top fit, If Uli Hoeness -Bayern Manager- would stand on my door, I wouldn't open my door, Cause its out of the question for me, To play for a club like Bayern, Their character is spoiled...

Best thing I listened in a long time

"I looked for you to give me transcendent experiences To transport me out of self and aloneness sent alienation Into a sense of oneness and connection, ecstatic and magical I became a junkie for it" from Rilkean Heart by Cocteau Twins: in memory of great German poet Rilke, who wrote many of such mesmerizing lines: Der Panther Im Jardin des Plantes, Paris Sein Blick ist vom Vorübergehn der Stäbe so müd geworden, daß er nichts mehr hält.

My Favorite German Word...
