Winter is here

Image
Reminds me of my love and that lovely Dylan song: On a night like this I can't get any sleep, The air is so cold outside And the snow's so deep. Build a fire, throw on logs And listen to it hiss And let it burn, burn, burn, burn On a night like this. Let the four winds blow Around this old cabin door, If I'm not too far off I think we did this once before. There's more frost on the window glass With each new tender kiss, But it sure feels right On a night like this.

Happy Love Exists

Image
There is something called happy love Originally uploaded by ACToker This is a banner from 3.5 years ago. It was hanged during the Fenerbahce game, at the end of the season, which gave us hope. If we had won, we would have been the leader. Unfortunately, we lost the game, and our season took a nosedive from that game on. This 2 weeks has been the opposite. Look at the results from our last games: Trabzonspor 0 - Besiktas 2: Trabzonspor is the only non-Istanbul team to win the championships. Away games in Trabzon are one of the toughest in the league. Besiktas 3 - Fenerbahce 0: If we had lost the game, the difference would have been 10 points. Fenerbahce was, and still is the current leader of the league. Manchester United 0 - Besiktas 1: Do I need to write more? Sivasspor 0 - Besiktas 1: Sivas were the runners-up from last season. They had the worst of starts to the season, but with the arrival of their new coach, they were looking to change that. We won after a commanding game. And my ...

Ricotta salata: Cheese extra ordinaire!

Image
Before I found real love, I would use the word "love" somewhat excessively. Skiing? I love it! Garcia Marquez? I love him. Artichokes? I love them! Not anymore. I am careful not to use this word out of context. However this delicacy Ricotta Salata, I discovered recently, makes me very close to using the L word. You don't know what to make of it: Is it cheese, or is it not? If it looks like feta, why doesn't it taste like feta? Is it hard, is it soft? Is it fresh, is it old? Then you cannot stop thinking of it. It is not love, but I will have to admit to my love and all the readers that I have an affair with Ricotta salata. What is it then? For those food enthusiasts like me, the production process is very important. I had written about the properties of milk and related products in my previous post . Shortly, milk has fat solube and water soluble proteins. Normal yogurts and cheeses contain mostly the fat solubles which make up %70 of the protein mass. Whey is what ...

Üzerim'den eksilmesin bayragimin gölgesi

(For those not familiar with Turkish football, there are 3 big teams in Turkish soccer. Besiktas, Galatasary, Fenerbahce, all from Istanbul. I am a Besiktas fan ever since I am aware of my existence) It was a windy, rainy London Saturday night. I was visiting my sister, before going to Liverpool to watch our Champions League game on Wednesday. I had to watch our derby game against Fenerbahce. We had a record of not losing to them in their own stadium for a long time. I had asked few other Besiktas fans about places to watch the game. Unlike Berlin, where you could literally walk into any betting shop to watch the Turkish league, the options are not that rich in London. Especially if you wanna stay close to the center. I was informed that a fancy kebab restaurant would be a good choice. I was disappointed to find the restaurant full, and small. I was literally shaking and sweating with anxiety. I rushed to a Internet shop, and began intense Google'ing. I found a reference to an ...

Of hope, love, and teachers...

Image
Today is Teacher's Day in Turkey. I would like to use this opportunity to thank all my teachers, and professors for helping me shaping my world view, understanding, and personality. The teacher-student relation is one of the most delicious and important aspects of the human experience, in fact perhaps one of its defining charachteristics. Each year we would celebrate this day in school, and I would spend the festivities listening to Queen on my walkman - I was not conscious of the importance of the day yet- praising the memory of Freddie Mercury, who died on 1991 this day. He was not a teacher, but his voice takes me in a delightful journey in another defining dimension of human experience, music. Here is Queen, with Teo Torriate, the only song in Japanese I can sing: This weekend was out of this world. 3 days with my love, to be crowned with a 2-0 victory over Eskisehirspor, which brought tears in my eyes, just like this fellow " galera " in the stadium:

What Rock is All About

I wanna head on collision with my love.

Leonard Cohen turns 74

Image
My favorite Leonard Cohen album is Death of a Ladies' Man. The position of the apostrophe is key to the title, and makes all the difference. Cohen was never a ladies man, but a man of his ladies. In the 2006 documentary "I'm Your Man" he was asked about his fame as a ladies man. He said: "Calling me a ladies man is an insult to the thousands of nights I spent alone in my bed." Everyone should watch this great documentary to gain insight on this great poet of our time. He turned 74 two days ago. I am so excited, and feel privileged that I will watch this legend live in two weeks. Here is my favorite Cohen song, "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye" I'm even more happy now, that this song makes sense to me finally thanks to that someone special.

Brain in love...

Functional MRI is one of the coolest scientific devices ever developed. With it the scientists are able to monitor which parts of the brain are activated, when individuals are involved in different activities. From dancing to taking decisions the functional MRI has revolutionized our understanding of many fundamental human activities. As Helen Fisher put it, the most passionate human activity, the romantic love is one of the latest to be investigated in functional MRI. According to their results, love activates the reward/punishment mechanisms, along with risk taking and strategic game playing parts of the brain. Unlike people who can leave in a split second, the activity in those areas continue even 15 months after separation. Also, people who claim to be in love after 25 years still have those regions active! Lastly, the same reward region is activated in a cocaine high! Here is a 15 minute video of Helen Fisher's talk, which is definitely worth watching! Helen Fisher: The Brain ...

Believe in it children, believe in it! We will see beautiful days, sunny days...

Image
We play Porto tonight. If we beat them, qualify for the second round in the champions league. It is for this exactly this hope, and the excitement that send shivers up and down my spine that I love Besiktas... And nothing can describe my feelings better than the Besiktas chant we wrote from a poem by one of the greatest Turkish poets, Nazim Hikmet . Believe in it children, believe in it! We will see beautiful days, sunny days... We will beat Porto, and sing chants of glory... Do open http://forum.forzabesiktas.com in an Internet Explorer window to hear the song based on the poem.

I am in love

We won 2-1. I am in heaven. I find it hard to write down my feelings. Its not the score, its not the game, it's not the team we beat. It's this love I share with millions. It's this love, which finally found its lover. I know this will be a short coming together. I know the players will forget this game soon and play miserable as they have done for the last years. But everything was worth fot these 10 minutes, when love -in my humble opinion- appeared in it most pure form in televisions: We did not sing my favorite chant, Gündogdu - The day has broken, during the game. I am sure they did sing it after the game. Here is the chant that means so much to me, and its translation We woke up when the day broke, and we made it to the stadiums Covered us with flags, in the name of Besiktas, Our neighborhood is the neighborhood of honest men, it charms every one, May the shadow of my flag never be far away from me, Here we are, standing shoulder to shoulder on days of trouble, Don...

Che Ya Da Feyyaz

Image
I hate odd years. There is no football during summer. Even though national football is by no ways a replacement for my insatiable love -Besiktas not, football- it keeps my mind busy. And on odd years like this one my longing for that beautiful black and white jerseys peaks around August. I start reading articles about Besiktas, watch videos of old games and Pascal Nouma in an attempt to sooth the pain of longing in my hearth. I will post an article about Che Guevarra and Feyyaz Ucar by Zeki Demirkubuz , the internationally acclaimed director of Innocence , in Turkish. If I find the time I will translate it into English over the weekend. Che does not need any introduction. Feyyaz was the part of the legendary Metin-Ali-Feyyaz forward trio of the legendary Besiktas squad of my childhood who won 3 league championships in a streak, one without a single defeat. He was the playboy of the three... So let this text commemorate those days when the playboy football players were decent blokes li...

Feeling Naive Today

Even though they have a hard image, associated with -perhaps self-imposed- homelessness, punk for me represents musical purity, amateur idealism, and naiveness. Especially the music of Ramones. Sometimes I wish the relation between men and women were as naive as their song "Girl I wanna Be Your Boyfriend": " Hey, little girl I wanna be your boyfriend Sweet little girl I wanna be your boyfriend Do you love me babe? What do you say? Do you love me babe? What can I say? Because I wanna be your boyfriend "

First Day of My Life
