Misperceptions about the state of the art in evolution research

Image
I intended to post an article on evolution 2 weeks ago, on Charles Darwin's birthday, to commemorate his life's work, which is perhaps the single most important intellectual achievement in the scientific era. I would like to bring to your attention this great article which summarizes a moderated discussion from the recent meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on the current status of evolution research, and how to deal with the common misconceptions about the evolution -under the pressure of ever strengthening fundamentalist disinformation campaigns. Also for your information, this website has a complete online version of Darwin's works.

if you just want to dissapear...

... like i do on some nights, close your eyes, put on this Autechre tune, and imagine you are Dave Bowman , re-born as a Star Child, gazing on to the Blue Planet in the cold stillness of the deep space.

Yes we can...

Obama has the wind behind him. It is clear to see why, after watching this viral video filled with celebrities, and two very clear and striking messages that fit the zeitgeist -as far as I can follow- "we are not divided as our politicians are" and "yes we can [make a change]." I am not sure how this video echoed among older voters, but I am sure it went down with very well with the young.

Ali Boma Ye

I recently watched When We Were Kings on DVD. It is an Oscar-Wining documentary about the tight fight between George Foreman, who was 22 and top of his time, and Muhammad Ali, who was 32, promoted by Ron King as Rumble In The Jungle. The fight took place in Congo, where the the Dictator Mobutu agreed to pay the 10 million dollars to raise the image of his country. The fight was supported with an All-Star troupe of African American entertainers, including BB King and James Brown. I definitely recommend the movie and it's soundtrack to get to learn this inspiring figure. Muhammed Ali is an amazing personality. In addition to being one of the greatest professionals of the history, he was at the same time an entertainer, a man of principles, a social transformer, and a poet in his own right. This clip from Michael Parkinson's show -the famous British TV personality who chose him the greatest entertainer he interviewed- gives a small clue why it is worth watching When We Were Kin

The definition of cool

After years of searching I finally found Le Samourai , and will watch it soon. Alain Delon, got to admit, defines the word cool in this movie...

Is limited Government Possible?

Cato Unbound is one of my favorite discussion forums on the web. Initiated by the Cato Institute , an libertarian think thank, experts from all sides of political spectrum exchange their ideas about a certain political issue. Previous issues included interesting topics such as: Can Marriage Survive? Religion and Politics, Home and Abroad Who Needs Government? Pirates, Collapsed States, and the Possibility of Anarchy Rethinking Health Insurance? When Does Inequality Matter? The Living Constitution They have started a new discussion under the motto " Is limited Government Possible? " which interests me very much.

Mint Julep a la Dylan

Image
Dylan's recept for traditional Southern US cocktail Mint Julep: "First up, you take four mint sprigs, two and a half ounces of bourbon. I'd put three. A table spoon of powder sugar, and a table spoon of water. You put the mint leaves, powder sugar and water in a Collins glass. You fill the glass with shaved, or crushed ice, and then add bourbon. Top that off with more ice. And...I'd like to garnish that with a mint sprig. Serve it with a straw. Two or three of those, and anything sounds good..." It does taste goood.

Baby Let Me Follow You Down

Image
My favorite Turkish TV personality is in Berlin, following the Berlinale. A great chance for me to take her out on a romantic dinner. Seems like I've got competition. This years Berlinale is opened by Martin Scorsese's Shine A Light, a documentary about a Rolling Stones concert. Ron Wood from Rolling Stones obviously hits on her on this video, taken on the gala night... http://www.ntvmsnbc.com/modules/habervideo/video.asp?CatID=5&cbVideo=3060&cbQuality=1 But I am determined, I am gonna follow her down... "Baby let me follow you down, baby let me follow you down Well I'll do anything in this godalmighty world If you just let me follow you down."

Reason to rock...

When introducing Bob Dylan to the Rock'n'Roll hall of fame Bruce Springsteen made this remark about Like a Rolling Stone, elected the best rock song of all time : "The first time I heard Bob Dylan, I was in the car with my mother listening to WMCA, and on came that snare shot that sounded like somebody had kicked open the door to your mind"" The snare shot was an unintentional consequence of Al Kooper -normally a guitarist- sitting in front of the electric organ, somehow intimidated by the skills of the Blues Guitar Genius Mike Bloomfield. He played the organ timidly, lagging behind not to miss a tone. The musical director wanted to take Kooper off the organ, but Dylan liked his style and told him to turn the organ volume on. No one was able to dind out, who the song was about after all these years. Some say its about Edie Sedgwick, some about Joan Baez, and some even say Dylan himself... I found this great article about the song on the web, which analytically ex
