International Year Of Astronomy

400 years ago Galileo Galilei first gazed at the skies through a telescope. He was probably the first human to gaze at the brilliant moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and many unseen stars and galaxies. But more than what he saw anything, how he saw what he saw, and how he used these observations have literally changed the world. Instead of submitting to dogma about how objects -or generally the world- should behave, he relied on observations, and a methodology to understand the behavior of objects. He was probably the most important figure in the development of science as we know it. He was also the first astronomer in the Western civilization. In honor of this great mind, UNESCO named 2009 the World Astronomical Year. I have 2 great sites in the spirit of this year: * Galaxy Zoo : The number of galaxies in the observable universe are thought to be in 100 billion range. Organizing, and classifying them is a galactical task. It turns out that human eye and mind are far better than

Best Football Song I've Listened

Die Toten Hosen is the best German Punk band without question. They are also hardcore Fortuna Düsseldorf Fans, who at one point financed the transfer a player for the club. They have a great song about the bad guys in German football, F.C. Bayern Munchen. I had the time on my daily subway commute to translate this great song: There are not many things in this world, To hold on to, Some say its love, maybe they've got a point, There is always god, when there's no one else left, Some believe in nothing, life's hardened them up, So many things can happen, So many things, There is only one thing I am sure of, I would never play for Bayern! If I were 20 yeras old, and super talented, And Real Madrid had knocked on my door, Along with Man United, I had already played for Germany, And mentally top fit, If Uli Hoeness -Bayern Manager- would stand on my door, I wouldn't open my door, Cause its out of the question for me, To play for a club like Bayern, Their character is spoiled

A good man first, a good Besiktas fan later

La Vittoria Sará Nostra! from Forza Besiktas on Vimeo . Have you ever dreamed in a dream? I'm sure most of you did. Have you ever noticed in your dream that it was a dream? I'm sure most of you did. But I am not sure if both of these happened to you simultaneously. I mead did you ever had a dream in a dream, in which you noticed it was just a dream, and you had to go back to the first dream, without noticing that the first one was also a dream? I had this delightful experience few weeks ago, thanks to my wonderful sports club Besiktas. It was few days before a game in Ankara that we had to win, when I dreamed. I was going to the stadium in Ankara, to watch the game. However the stadium in Ankara was the Olympiastadion. I was running around the many entrances to the stadium, only to hear the crowd inside chant, but not going in. I could not find the entrance. As I was about to get in, a sea of Besiktas supporters spilled out of the stadium, all with sad faces. We had drawn. Af

Die Frau Koma Kommt (*)

So spoke the school director on the "lautsprecher", which was not "lauter" than the pistol shots. 10 young souls, they won't dream, love, get old or even die anymore. Once you die, you die. For what? For what? Don't tell me there is purpose in this world. Mein herzliches Beileid, to all the families, to all Germany... (*) The code for a Amok warning. Yes, they had procedures for this case too. Which probably saved many many more young souls.

Son of man...

"What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man: You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images, where the sun beats... Waste Land - T.S. Eliot" In the wake of the financial crisis, people called for more regulation. Regulation and transparency. More regulation by whom? By the same people who got us into this mess? By the same people who were running a Ponzi scheme, and Nasdaq at the same time? I think we generally tend to underestimate our inclination to make mistakes, overestimate our powers to solve them, and our willingness to ignore them. In my humble opinion this is the fundamental reason behind the crisis we are facing now. To understand which simple flaws in human behavior lead to the crisis, I recommend the brilliant animation by Jonathan Jarvis, titled "Credit Crisis Explained". Thanks to Engin for bringing to my attention. The Crisis of Credit Visualized from Jonathan Jarvis on Vimeo Those

Judas

Judas, the accountant of Jesus and the apostles, drawn by Nikolai Ge. Borges wrote 3 variations on Judas and the problem of evil. In one of them, he was the real saviour, and not Jesus. Dylan wrote this: Why didn't Jesus forgive Judas, and made his bowels explode in a field?
