People of Rio de la Plata, Unite!

... or A proposal for South American dominance in the next world cup: Yes, it still hurts. Those four goals, that involve perfectionism in attacking football on the German side, and complete failure of the defensive skills on the Argentinian side. And God's sad sad face. So I have a proposal for the next World Cup. We all seen how good the Uruguay defensive line was. Just think about adding the dream forward line of Argentina with a 2 good defensive midfielders together.  It would be a dream team from the Rio De La Plata. After all, Uruguay has its roots in the Liga Federal, which was a federalist state aspiring to control whole Viceroyality of Rio De Plata, which includes today's Argentina, after gaining independence from Spain... If this doesn't work, they should at least bring together a team of chefs from both countries and tour the world: Montevideo: Buenos Aires:  The meat quality in Germany is comparable with the quality of Chinese toys. So I cannot eve...

3 Anthropology Facts that I love telling in a conversation

In Western Cultures future is associated with the forward direction. Past is associated with bacward direction. We leave the past "behind" and look "forward" for a better future. In some Andean cultures this is reversed. Future is unclear, we don't know it, we cannot see it. Just like our backs. Past on the other hand, is all known to us, we can analyze it, look it at every direction. Just like the wide view in front of us. A certain tribe in the Ocenia lives in a perpetual Wednesday. Their week is composed of today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, the day after the day after tomorrow, yesterday, the day before yesterday, the day before the day before yesterday. In other words, they are really living the moment, just like some "self help" gurus say. I ain't convinced, that I wanna live the moment... Finally, there are no curtains in Japan. The influential Japanese classical music composer Tōru Takemitsu was touched so much by the flickering of cu...

Far away, far away...

Image
"Far away, far away, Are not all lovely things far away? As far at least lies that valley, as the bedridden sun in the luminous east, The paralyzed mountains, the sickly river... Are not all things lovely far away, Are not all things lovely far away? Edgar Allen Poe - Valley of Unrest" Fall wakens the secret explorer in me. I have this urge to go to some beautiful place far away. This picture of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile and the Edgar Allan Poe Poem, which Lou Reed covered in his Raven Album describe my feelings these days perfectly.

Gabo is 80...

Image
My favorite author of all time, and arguably one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, Gabriel Garcia Marquez turned 80 today. 2007 is also remarkably 40th anniversary of his masterpiece 100 Years of Solitude, a book where he writes the history of the human civilization while masterfully ornamenting the story with magical happenings like a beautiful girl who simply is taken back to heaven because of their beauty, or a drought lasting 8 years, and 25th anniversary of his Nobel Literature prize. A Colombian friend once told me a TV interview of the master where he likened his writings to cooking a soup of words, stirring the soup and tasting it and carefully adding words to reach the correct taste. It is exactly how I felt about his books, his words inspire complex tastes in my body... From his stories such as "Nabo, the Man Who Made the Angels Wait"- which tells of a black boy who refuses to die to sing- "Blacaman the Good, the Vendor of Miracles" - t...

Riquelme Back Home

Image
According to this International Herald Tribune article, Boca Juniors have loaned Juan Roman Riquelme from Villareal for the Argentinian Closure Championship. After failing to clinch the title on 3 of the last games of the Opening championship, and loosing in a championship game (despite taking the early lead in the game), Boca seems to be doing everything necessary not to repeat the mistakes of the last season. Riquelme will hopefully fill the hole left by Fernando Gago, who left for Real Madrid.

Fire devastes Sweetheart of the Ocean

Image
Pablo Neruda called it "Novia del Océano" - the Sweetheart of the Ocean. Salvador Allende and Agustor Pinochet, the two most important figures in modern Chilean history were born and raised in it. It carried the nickname "the Pearl of Pacific" before the Panama Canal was opened. A UNESCO World heritage city, Valaparaiso's old town was devastated by a fire. Experiencing a recovery after years of gentrification, Valaparasio was recently tittled the cultural capital of Chile. I hope that the damage is not as extensive as it is seen on these pictures .
